What to check when hiring plumbers in South Africa

  • Agree the call-out fee, the hourly or fixed rate, and whether parts are charged on top, in writing, before an emergency plumber starts. Out-of-hours overcharging and 'while I'm here' add-ons are common complaints.
  • Be wary of a plumber who, on a first visit, says your whole system or boiler must be replaced. Get a second opinion and an itemised quote (parts and labour separately) before agreeing to major work.
  • Gas and boiler work is a separate, regulated trade, not general plumbing. Make sure anyone working on a gas appliance is specifically registered to do gas work, and ask to see that registration before they start.
  • In South Africa, electrical work must be signed off with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) issued by a registered person. Insist on the CoC, and for plumbing look for PIRB or IOPSA registration, because without a valid CoC a future home-insurance claim can be refused.
  • For a new home or major structural build, the builder must be registered with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) and the home enrolled before construction. Check this before you pay a deposit.

Verify before you hire

  • Your plumber should be registered with the PIRB (Plumbing Industry Registration Board, pirb.co.za) or be a member of IOPSA (Institute of Plumbing South Africa): verify the registration before you hire.
  • For a property transfer, geyser replacement or new water installation many municipalities require a plumbing Certificate of Compliance (CoC); only a registered plumber can issue one: confirm you'll receive it.
  • Check the business is registered with CIPC (Companies and Intellectual Property Commission), is VAT-registered if applicable, and carries public liability insurance.
  • Get an itemised written quote and favour recent, verifiable reviews.

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • Not PIRB-registered, or can't issue a plumbing Certificate of Compliance where one is required.
  • Cash-only with no tax invoice, or a large deposit demanded up front.
  • No proof of insurance or a verifiable business address.
  • Pressures you to skip the CoC for a property sale or geyser swap.
