- Get the diagnosis and an itemised quote in writing, and be wary of pressure to sign on the spot for a long 'guarantee' that is only worth anything while that firm is still trading.
- In South Africa, electrical work must be signed off with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) issued by a registered person. Insist on the CoC, and for plumbing look for PIRB or IOPSA registration, because without a valid CoC a future home-insurance claim can be refused.
- For a new home or major structural build, the builder must be registered with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) and the home enrolled before construction. Check this before you pay a deposit.
