> "During lockdown due to COVID 19 Werner took a drive out on a Saturday to try and find a geyser to replace my Mom's that had burst. He also contacted his colleagues in the industry to try and source one for us; but was unable to due to all of the hardware shops and plumbing suppliers being closed. On Monday he first checked if I had was able to source one during the weekend and when I advised that I hadn't he went and bought one and installed it at her house and afterwards sent me an invoice. This gentleman went out of his way to assist me to ensure that my retired Mom was not without hot water for longer than was necessary and without having met him he was able to save the day. Thank you"

## Before you hire a plumber
_What to check when choosing this kind of trade (general guidance, not a claim about this business):_
- Agree the call-out fee, the hourly or fixed rate, and whether parts are charged on top, in writing, before an emergency plumber starts. Out-of-hours overcharging and 'while I'm here' add-ons are common complaints.
- Be wary of a plumber who, on a first visit, says your whole system or boiler must be replaced. Get a second opinion and an itemised quote (parts and labour separately) before agreeing to major work.
- Gas and boiler work is a separate, regulated trade, not general plumbing. Make sure anyone working on a gas appliance is specifically registered to do gas work, and ask to see that registration before they start.
- In South Africa, electrical work must be signed off with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) issued by a registered person. Insist on the CoC, and for plumbing look for PIRB or IOPSA registration, because without a valid CoC a future home-insurance claim can be refused.
- For a new home or major structural build, the builder must be registered with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) and the home enrolled before construction. Check this before you pay a deposit.
